There is an entire history of photography prior to the common point-and-shoot digital camera that everyone and their dog has these days. Before cell phone cameras were abundant and thousands of photographs were uploaded onto social media sites every day, photographers had to capture images on film and get them developed before they could see the final results. Film came in black and white, color, even different sizes – for use in large and medium format cameras. Have you ever shot with one of these classic cameras?

The film camera is a piece of photographic equipment that takes a rapid sequence of images on film strips. Video/digital cameras have replaced the film camera for private use and professionals now use movie cameras. In comparison with a still camera that captures one shot, movie cameras take a series of images, called frames.

There are many accessories that can be used to enhance camera film photography and the following three are probably the most important elements that enable the operator (person taking the pictures) to captured the perfect images, make it an easier tasks and gives them the freedom of enhancements when taking the pictures.

In photography a neutral density filter more commonly referred to as a ND filter reduces or changes the intensity of all wavelengths of colour and light equally, but there is no change to the hue or colour redemption. The filter is either grey or colourless (clear). The purpose of a standard ND filter is to control and reduce the light that enters the lens allowing the photographer to select the correct combinations ensuring that the pictures are not over exposed. This achieves shallower depth or blur of the subject. There are two common ND filters, variable and extreme. The main drawback of ND filters is that to be flexible in your photography you would need to purchase and carry a range of NDs. This is an expensive proposition, so the variable ND filter was created. This is two polarized filters that are used together with at least one capable of rotating. The rear filter cuts out the light whilst the front one turns and the amount of remaining light decreases the closer the filters become. With this technique the light reaching the sensor can be varied giving the photographer almost sole control.

Extreme ND filters are needed to create land and seascapes or motion images where blurring is required. This is achieved through the extreme ND filter as it is a stack of filters working together. However this can lead to quality issues and to combat this some manufacturers now produce a high quality extreme ND filter. These filters allow for extreme slow shutter speed even in bright conditions.

From photographers point of view there is nothing so frustrating when using a camera film when they cannot hold the camera still to achieve that ultimate shot. The solution in this case is a camera tripod, which provides a way to stabilize and elevate the camera, flash or other piece of equipment. Camera tripods have three legs and a mounting that will couple and secure the camera whilst still allowing for rotation and tilt when mounted.

Possibly the biggest advantage of using camera film is the wide range of used lenses that are available enabling the photographer to have a great choice and variety in the ways they can capture their subject matter. Used camera lenses have huge second hand appeal and are also a good way to save money; this is also an excellent way of finding out whether you really need to invest in a newer version of the lens. Like buying anything that has been pre owned, there are certain things to consider such as where you purchase, it is better to purchase from a shop or specialist dealer, if you do purchase from a private seller be sure to ask why the lens is being sold. Check first for physical signs of damage and then check the workings of the lens. Look closely at the aperture blades and make sure that they are not sticky. Check that the mounting ring is in good condition, and if purchasing a zoom lens be sure to see that the lens runs smoothly. Check the lens focus and above all else let the price be your determining factor.
